How to add a personalized thank-you note to Shopify orders

Updated

A short thank-you in the box makes an order feel personal, and it costs next to nothing. On Shopify there are a few ways to add one. Which fits depends on what the note says: the same words for everyone, the customer’s name, or a message your shopper wrote.

Short answer

For the customer’s name on every note, add one line to Shopify’s packing slip template: it’s free. Write notes by hand when orders are few, and use an app such as Noteable when the words come from your shopper, such as a gift message.

The same note in every box

If every note says the same thing, you don’t need an app. Print a stack of cards from your own design, or order them from a print shop, and put one in each order as you pack it.

Option 1: Add it to your packing slip, with the customer’s name

Shopify’s packing slip template can print a thank-you with the customer’s first name, for free. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings Shipping and delivery and open the packing slip template under Documents. Add a line like this where you want the note:

Liquid · packing slip template
<p>
  Thank you{% if customer.first_name != blank %},
  {{ customer.first_name }}{% endif %}.
  We hope you love it. {{ shop.name }}
</p>

customer.first_name is the buyer’s first name and shop.name is your store’s name. For a gift shipped to someone else, the buyer and the person opening the box aren’t the same: shipping_address.first_name greets the recipient instead. Then print packing slips from the order, or select several orders and print all their slips at once.

The note prints in the packing slip’s layout, on the same sheet as the item list. It’s personal and free, but it isn’t a card. Order printer apps work the same way, with templates you edit in HTML and Liquid.

Option 2: Write them by hand

At a few orders a week, a handwritten note is hard to beat. Print the packing slip first, so you have the name in front of you, and keep a stack of blank cards by the packing table. It gets slow on busy days, and that’s when most stores stop.

Option 3: Print a card in your own design

Noteable prints what shoppers type on your product page onto your own card design, in your fonts and layout. It doesn’t read the buyer’s name from the order, so for a thank-you with the buyer’s name and nothing to type, the packing slip is the better tool. Noteable fits when the words on the card come from your shopper:

  • The note is a gift message. A shopper sending a gift writes the message on the product page, and Noteable prints it on your card, ready to go in the box with the gift.
  • You sell personalized thank-you cards. For wedding, baby shower or business thank-you cards, shoppers type the names or the message on the product page, and you print each card from the order.

Setup takes three steps: upload your card as a PDF and draw a box where each entry goes, add the Noteable Fields block to your product page, and print the cards from the order, or a batch from the Orders page. The guide to printing gift messages from Shopify orders walks through each step.

What to write

  • Thank them by name, and sign it with yours. A person reads better than a store.
  • Keep it to two or three lines, so it’s read rather than skimmed.
  • Say something about what they bought: how to care for it, or what goes well with it.
  • Tell them how to reach you if anything isn’t right.

Questions

How do I add a thank-you note to Shopify orders?

The free way is the packing slip template: in your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Shipping and delivery, open the packing slip template under Documents, and add a line with customer.first_name. The note then prints on every packing slip. For a card in your own design, print a stack of cards if every note is the same, or use an app such as Noteable when each card carries what your shopper wrote.

Can I print the customer’s name on a card?

On the packing slip, yes: customer.first_name prints the buyer’s first name, and shipping_address.first_name prints the name of the person the order ships to. Noteable prints only what shoppers type into its fields on your product page, so it doesn’t add the buyer’s name from the order by itself.

Do thank-you notes need an app?

No. The packing slip template prints a note with the customer’s name for free, and a stack of printed cards covers a note that’s the same for everyone. An app helps when every card is different and should look like the rest of your brand, such as a shopper’s gift message printed on your own card.
